Worldwide, hundreds of marijuana seed banks struggle to position their varieties in the pots of weed growers. But before the gift, there is the wrapping; and to differentiate each other from their competitors, it is paramount for them to apply, as their introduction card, the concept of packaging; that is, the art of protecting and differentiating their products, for their distribution, shipping and storage.

From the beginning of this business, when seeds were practically sent in a stamped envelope, to these days, when banks may even give music CD’s as a gift along with their seeds, this essential branding element has significantly evolved. Today, we bring you some of the most curious or remarkable examples in our warehouses.

Who are they? Strain Hunters, by Green House Seed Co, a bank launched in 2013, gathering a collection of seeds with a certainly exotic spirit. This bank is also a cannabis genetics library, with data collected during the Strain Hunters Expeditions, some sort of pioneer expeditions around the world to “preserve and protect local varieties for future generations”.

What is their packaging like? In this case, the seed container resembles the shape and distribution of a CD case. It does contain a DVD with videos of the different expeditions of these variety hunters, always in search of the most exotic one.

Who are they? Elite Seeds is a Spanish bank which does research with innovative techniques such as in vitro culture. It works with multiple combinations of substances in order to cause sex reversion in cannabis, thus obtaining seeds coming from crosses that, as a result, produce healthy and disease-free plants.

What is their packaging like? A bullet-shaped keychain, which is dispensed in boxes similar to those of eye drops. The seeds come in their plastic pod, which in its turn comes inside a screw top metal capsule with the shape of a bullet. This format is also useful to keep certain amounts of hash, grass or extraction.

What is their packaging like? Wood. Their green, sustainable-economy philosophy includes respect and integration with the environment, so their seed packaging follows the same principles and is presented in a small micro-chiselled wooden box with a stamped sheath containing the seeds. A beautiful way to close the plant circle.

Who are they? Medical Seeds is a Spanish seed bank founded in 2008 after a long genetic selection process of plants coming from Holland and Canada. They have already created their own crosses based on the selected plants. The bank currently has 12 seed varieties, very appreciated among medical consumers for their narcotic and relaxing effect.

What is their packaging like? Medicine-like packages. One of the most successful formats considering its target, with a front side similar to that of an antibiotic and a reverse which shows all the information on the cultivation (weather, production, height…). It also displays the legal counter-indications of this type of seeds and their marketing. All comprised in a lovely packaging which stands out for its originality.

Who are they? The Soma Seeds bank was founded in Amsterdam by an old Rastafarian, Soma, who has been experimenting for 40 years following a traditional method, respectful with the environment. He makes his own clothes, smokes like a chimney and has studied all aspects of marijuana “as a tool that may save humanity from its own destruction”. No more, no less.

What is their packaging like? Rolling paper packs. Of course, a stoner of such astral dimensions could only give its packaging the shape of something he knows very well. To complete the riddle, the package carries a real rolling paper pack and some cut cardboard for gauzy filter tips.

Who are they? CBD Crew is a joint venture between Mr. Nice Seedbank and Resin Seeds aimed at producing 100% of their CBD-rich seeds for medical marijuana patients. Their objective is to obtain an optimal THC-CDB 1:1 ratio, something they have already achieved in most of the varieties they market.

What is their packaging like? Condom or wet towels pack. Shiny on both sides, so is the packaging chosen by Howard Marks (Mr. Nice) himself, in collaboration with Jaime (Resin Seeds) and Scott Blakey (from Shantibaba). A packaging that reminds us of man’s best friend in the trenches of seduction. A chromatic marvel which can be opened with our teeth, in one breath.

Who are they? Big Buddha Seed is a synonym for Cheese, the variety with which they won the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2006 for the “best Indica”. Since then, their cross-genetics has allowed this British firm to offer up to 16 types of feminized cannabis seed, including 3 auto-flowering varieties.

What is their packaging like? Cardboard, plastic and a lot of humour, their motto being a funny Buda in the strangest positions, while playing with the variety name. In this case, Cheesus, in honour of Christ the Redeemer, who has even been stapled to the cross. But they also have some futurist ones where the Buda is the impersonator of “I, Robot” itself.

Their objective is to improve the lack of genetic diversity and stop the inbreeding depression suffered by many commercial varieties nowadays.

One of the neatest designs on the market, it displays a successful combination of colours and typographies which demonstrate that Madrilenians have taken very seriously to reach the lungs of growers, at a silent but steady pace.

Who are they? After almost 20 years, Sagarmatha Seeds has already become a renowned seed bank, preferred by many growers. Like their AK-47 variety, one of the flagships of their arsenal, with possibly the highest THC rating of all the auto-flowering varieties they sell.

Who are they? Dinafem, the mother ship and a seed bank that internationally trades the best selection of its own varieties but also those of other banks. It is a synonym for stability and genetic quality. Since 2005, when it became the first bank of feminized cannabis seeds in Spain, its research on auto-flowering and feminized seeds has placed it at the forefront of seed sales worldwide.

What is their packaging like? The unique and incomparable metal can. A commitment to durability and discretion. The seeds are packaged and transported in Eppendorf microtubes, where seeds and silica gel are placed, separated by a polyurethane membrane. The gel acts as a humidity regulator, so that they can be delivered in optimal conditions for the germination of a real champion plant.
